Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS)

Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) refers to the use of mechanical devices to assist or completely replace the pumping function of a failing heart. It is primarily used in patients with advanced heart failure who do not respond adequately to medications. MCS devices can be life-saving, either as a temporary bridge to recovery, a bridge to heart transplantation, or as long-term (destination) therapy.

Patients may require MCS if they experience:
Severe or end-stage heart failure
Cardiogenic shock (sudden failure of heart function)
Declining response to standard heart failure treatments
Waiting for a heart transplant (Bridge-to-Transplant)
Heart muscle recovery support (Bridge-to-Recovery)
Long-term therapy in non-transplant candidates (Destination Therapy)

When is MCS Recommended?

Types of Mechanical Circulatory Support Devices:
Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP):
Temporarily supports the heart by improving blood flow to the coronary arteries and reducing the workload on the heart.

Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD):
A surgically implanted device that helps the left ventricle pump blood to the rest of the body. Can be short-term or long-term.

Right Ventricular Assist Device (RVAD):
Supports the right side of the heart, often used in combination with LVAD.

Biventricular Assist Device (BiVAD):
Supports both ventricles in cases of severe biventricular heart failure.

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO):
Provides both cardiac and respiratory support; commonly used in critical care settings.
