Rare and Complex Congenital Heart Disease Successfully Treated with Advanced Surgery
Congenital heart diseases are usually detected early in life, but in rare cases, they may remain hidden until adulthood. One such exceptional case involved a 33-year-old gentleman from North Kolkata who was recently diagnosed with a Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD)—a congenital condition marked by a hole in the septum separating the heart’s two lower chambers.
A Rare and Challenging Diagnosis
Although VSD is present from birth, some patients remain symptom-free for years. In this case, further detailed cardiac evaluation revealed a much more complex picture. Along with the VSD, the patient was diagnosed with a Ruptured Sinus of Valsalva, a rare abnormal communication between the aortic sinus and a heart chamber.
To further complicate the condition, the patient also had Aortic Valve Regurgitation, commonly known as a leaky aortic valve. This condition causes blood to flow backward from the aorta into the left ventricle, increasing the heart’s workload and risking long-term complications if left untreated.
The coexistence of VSD, ruptured sinus of Valsalva, and aortic valve regurgitation is extremely rare, accounting for less than 0.5% of all congenital heart diseases.
Comprehensive Surgical Management
Considering the complexity, a carefully planned open-heart surgery was undertaken. The procedure included:
Repair of the Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD)
Repair of the Ruptured Sinus of Valsalva
Aortic Valve Repair to restore normal valve function and prevent regurgitation
The surgery was performed with meticulous precision, with the goal of restoring normal cardiac anatomy while avoiding valve replacement.
Excellent Recovery and Outcome
The patient’s post-operative recovery was smooth and uneventful. He was discharged in stable condition on the 4th post-operative day, with satisfactory heart function and significant clinical improvement.
A Milestone in Advanced Cardiac Care
This case highlights the importance of timely diagnosis, advanced imaging, and expert surgical intervention in managing rare and complex congenital heart conditions. Successfully correcting multiple cardiac defects in a single operation reflects the high level of surgical expertise, teamwork, and multidisciplinary care available at our center—offering patients renewed health and improved quality of life.
